Weekend wrapup

I had a pretty good Saturday. I went to St. Augustine with a friend/fellow writer at the paper, Josh. His wife, Michelle, drew two Todd and Penguin guest comics. Both are funny, the funnier of the two being an absolutely R-rated strip, so I am debating if I will run it on the site or post it on the blog. It involves the characters from "Get Fuzzy" in a sort of cool crossover.
Which reminds me of two April Fool's comics I did.

Speaking of Saturday, what the hell happened to Saturday Night Live? This week's outing was perhaps the WORST I've seen in five years. There were maybe two instances where I laughed, but the rest was just painful. It was as if they spent the week leading up to the show sitting down in writer's meetings, culling the best and funniest sketches into a pile which they then proceeded to pour gasoline on and light on fire.

Saturday night wasn't an entire entertainment waste, though. I saw a decent low budget (er, I mean Indie) horror movie called Salvage. Once you get past the first 5 minutes of campy horror music and a cliche killer in the woods stalking a victim thing, it gradually finds itself with a rather interesting story about a girl who works the graveyard shift at a gas station (which in itself is rich in horror material, trust me on that) who keeps re-living the same day over and over, in which she is brutally murdered. Or is she? Perhaps, she is slowly losing her mind, she thinks.

There are a few moments where the movie's low budget-ness reveals itself, but for the most part, the movie really works. It is rare that I like a horror film because they almost never live up to the expectations I have for them. However, I had no expectations with this, and was very pleased. The ending even surprised me, though it is similar to the ending of a short story I read years ago, but even so, it works. If you like horror movies ignore that god awful remake of "The Pulse" and check this out... or grab "The Descent" if you missed this Aussie flick in the theaters. THAT was an awesome movie and a great example of horror done correctly.

About Me:
I was a reporter at a Florida newspaper, where I covered city politics and draw editorial comics. Now, I'm a Blogger Dad (click the link for my webpage - the blog on the bottom is for Todd and Penguin) in search of a job and attempting to write a book or four. I'm also a cartoonist, how most of you know me, who draws Todd and Penguin, Taking Up Space and the occasional other titles, featured on KeenSpot.com. I'm married (sorry, all you ladies interested in overweight guys who spend too much time drawing) and have a one year old son and two cats. Three of the above mentioned poop way too much!
